CleanPowerSF and Valley Clean Energy Join California Community Power

Community Choice Energy agencies become members of Joint Powers Authority to bring additional benefits to San Francisco and Yolo County electricity customers

Sunnyvale, Calif. – CleanPowerSF and Valley Clean Energy have joined California Community Power, a Joint Powers Authority (JPA). The agencies join eight other Community Choice Aggregators (CCAs) to combine their buying power to procure new, cost-effective clean energy and reliability resources to continue advancing local and state climate goals.

California Community Power members represent more than 3 million customer accounts and 7.6 million people across more than 145 municipalities and 17 counties. The CCAs serve a combined annual load of more than 36,000 gigawatt hours, which represents about 40% of PG&E’s annual electric load. CleanPowerSF and Valley Clean Energy join CC Power members Central Coast Community Energy, East Bay Community Energy, MCE, Peninsula Clean Energy, Redwood Coast Energy Authority, San José Clean Energy, Silicon Valley Clean Energy and Sonoma Clean Power.

“Addressing the challenges brought on by climate change will require a collective effort in California—to make a real difference, we need to work together,” said SFPUC Acting General Manager Michael Carlin. “California Community Power will allow local government renewable energy service providers across the state to speak with one clear, decisive voice and to align our shared goal of providing clean, affordable power to all Californians.”

“California Community Power is an important step forward for CCAs and the State,” said Mitch Sears, Valley Clean Energy Interim General Manager. “It provides member CCAs the advantages of scale to supply even more cost-effective clean electricity to our customers without sacrificing the local control that makes CCAs so unique and popular. We’re also excited to join because California Community Power is an innovation hub that will drive the energy sector forward and help position California for success in a transitioning climate and economy.”

We are very pleased to welcome CleanPowerSF and Valley Clean Energy as the newest members of California Community Power,” said Girish Balachandran, California Community Power Board Chair and Silicon Valley Clean Energy CEO. “Our efforts to leverage our joint buying power and economies of scale under the JPA structure will bring additional benefits to even more customers, while helping to advance the state’s transition to a clean grid.”

Under the JPA structure, individual members are not obligated to participate in all joint procurements or projects. Each CCA is represented by their CEO or other designee on the board of directors, which operates with open and transparent meetings compliant with the Brown Act. The JPA structure safeguards members from additional liabilities so there is no added risk for the members. Each CCA maintains its community-driven, local autonomy to meet the needs of their customers and region.
